Okay, here is the draft of the whole contexted speech from the Berlinale International Jury Press Conference (courtesy: shay-hiddles)
So the general sentiment has been-
Meryl Streep: “There is a core of humanity that travels right through every culture. And afterall, we are all from Africa originally.”
People:
If anyone has read their evolutionary science properly they’d know that Meryl was only saying a proven scientific fact. And Africa is a place NOT a colour!
When you google “Are we from Africa originally?” this is what shows up
So, scientifically she isn’t wrong
The other thing she said was “we’re all Berliners, we’re all Africans.” was probably a reference to the JFK quote
“Ich bin ein Berliner”, she was only trying to put forward the fact that there is a common thread of humanity and empathy which universally flows through all human beings regardless of how we look.
The main thing is:
The question asked to her had nothing to do with #OscarsSoWhite
Or even diversity primarily, it was only about how they decided to see movies from different places given they are different cultures and she said ultimately you see them with your hearts which is what you really do!
Also, she had clearly mentioned before in the press conference how inclusion is very important for her and how this jury had ATLEAST gender equality, she was not refuting anything.
Honestly, I know you might think I am biased but everything I have mentioned above is based on “research” which most people do not do and instead follow deceiving headlines which are only made to boost company sales.
Again to reiterate,
The question asked to her had nothing to do with #OscarsSoWhite
so read the fine-print guys!
You are welcome to judge her however you want or on whatever basis, for that matter anybody based on your opinions about things and people. But do the judging on the basis of your intellectual mind and not on the basis of taken out of context headlines of news organizations.
